My September Tarot Reading: Surrender, Nourishment and Spiritual Growth

Blessings, beautiful souls —

September first. Back to Hogwarts Day. Hobonichi Release Day*. Labour Day. An important day for my husband, should it all unfold today as it is meant to. The day I received my first clairaudient message from the Black Madonna (Mother Mary) in 2018.

There is magic in September first, so I wanted to make sure I moved forward into this month with the right energetic intention and spiritual Awareness, through a month-ahead reading. I also went through the words gifted to me by the Black Madonna and reflected on the message, on my calling, and how far I have stepped forward since that first day.

In the darkness and silence of 4h30, I pulled my cards and set up my little morning altar with the following decks: Seasons of the Witch [Mabon], Pocket Archetypes, The Herbcrafter’s Tarot, and my own creation, fleurs celeste – a flower essences oracle and tarot deck. Immediately, two things stood out to me: first, in the tarot cards, all the elements are present, and second, the Divine Feminine is prominent (The Womb and the presence of two Queen cards).

Moving through the energy reading for the month, the messages were as follows:

  • 20. Harvest Moon – The message of this card is clear: this month is the time to slow down, adopt a slower pace, be more gentle on myself, and incorporate more self-care into my routine. I should fall into the comfort of the season rather than trying to fight against it, which is fitting considering my first thought this morning was: what am I meant to create next? Right now, nothing: I just need to sit in the stillness, surrender to the quiet, and allow that space to illuminate to me what is next for my spiritual growth.
  • The Womb – Again, the message of nourishment, harmony, warmth, and love enters here. My theme for September is making itself quite clear. This card invites me to come back to the warmth of the womb and allow the Universal Mother to care for me – which is quite fitting since the Holy Mother (Mary) spoke to me on this date eight years ago and asked the same of me. Within this soft, safe, and love-filled space, we can heal and grow.
  • Madre of Fire [THYME] – How curious that the Queen in this deck is named Mother. Here she is, yet again. The mothers in this deck represent love, nourishment, and guidance. And while I wondered what I might create next, this card lets me know that the fire of creativity is arriving this month; I just need to stoke it through nourishing myself – and to add some magic to my dishes with a little thyme from my garden (I’m on it! Roasted veggies tonight!).
  • Four of Cups [Burdock], Five of Swords [Mistletoe], Queen of Pentacles [Agrimony] – First, I notice the transition of the moon phases on these cards, leading me up to that Harvest Moon I pulled at the beginning. The energy here speaks to clearly unraveling what no longer serves me, understanding where to invest my time and energy, and then becoming more rooted in what is truly nourishing and sustains me as mother in my household. September asks me to September asks me to feel what is true, think clearly about what needs to change, and then bring that truth into my physical life.

September is a month of discernment: releasing what drains me so there is room to fully receive what sustains me. Again, this all returns back to being cared for by the Universe – by the Universal Mother. Perhaps by falling into Gaia and letting her nourish me, as I know she is so eager to do. Or maybe by returning to Mother Mary and learning more about the work I am to do for her and with her. I will allow it to unfold as it is meant to; I will allow the buildup to the illumination of the Harvest Moon to unravel slowly as I am called to surrender. I will return home to myself within it all.

September is asking me to surrender, to allow myself to be nourished and cared for, to dedicate time to myself, and to trust the spark of creativity to arrive once I’ve given myself space to more clearly understand what sustains me and what no longer serves me. I need to focus on precisely what the season calls for: warmth. More teas. More candles lit. More quiet. More fresh cooking with the last harvests from my own garden. More cozy sweaters. More calm days with my kids. More embracing the moment. More presence. More markets before it gets too cold to enjoy them. More reading. More playing with cards. More connecting with Mother Mary. And, above all, more gratitude to sustain me.

Looking back at my daily tarot pulls for August, two cards appeared more than any others: Judgement and the Ace of Swords. I love looking back at my cards this way. A single daily pull can speak to the energy of one particular morning, but when the same cards continue appearing throughout an entire month, I start to wonder what larger conversation is unfolding beneath them.

Judgement feels particularly significant. This is the card of awakening, reckoning, resurrection, and answering a call. It asks us to listen for the voice that has been trying to reach us and rise beyond the limits we have placed upon ourselves; awaken from our unhealed death. The Ace of Swords carries a similar sense of awakening through awareness, but through mental clarity. It is the sharpness of understanding – the piercing through the fog.

Together, these cards feel like a message about seeing clearly and then answering what we see, stepping into where we are meant to be, and no longer making excuses for healing we are avoiding. This is fitting for all I navigated through August. I was revisiting old pieces of myself while also becoming clearer about what I want to carry forward. August called to me, and September is asking me to surrender to that call. Stop trying to name it and merely accept it.

So I enter September without needing to know exactly where this path is leading. August brought the awakening and the clarity; September asks me to stop reaching for answers and surrender to nourishment. I will let myself be held by the season, nourished by the Mother, and guided by the quiet. The work now is not to force the next step, but to be present enough to recognize it when it arrives.
