Visiting the Kiehl’s Flagship Store in NYC – Informative Specialists, Innovative Products, Astonishing Experience!

Hey there,

I just got back from my first trip to New York City, last night! It seems strange that my first blog post back would be about Kiehl’s instead of about NYC as a whole. But I’m obsessed with quality skincare as of late, so I can’t help but make a blog post about my visit to their flagship store!

Kiehl’s began in 1851 as an apothecary in New York City at 109 on 3rd Avenue. Because this is now the location of the flagship store, there are things you can do and buy at that location that cannot be found anywhere else in the world! One of these specialty experiences includes an apothecary preparation.

Sitting down with my skincare specialist Angelina, she tested my skin using special, changing pH strips. She discovered that my skin was normal oily and very oily. Using her very fancy and old-school looking ‘Skin Atlas’, we went through different aspects of my skin and selected what we thought to be my most crucial skin problems. We determined that ‘Texture’ and ‘Pores’ were my biggest personal skin concerns and the preparation process began after that.

Using a tester tube, she created a concoction of the two concentrates and the oil base that would make up my newest skincare product. My preparation would include concentrates of the following products:
Texture Refining Complex – with vitamin F and LHA
Pore Minimizing Complex – with samphira extract and salicylic acid

The entire process was really unique and made me feel as thought I was an in an old apothecary, really and truly getting skincare tailored to my unique, specific issues and concerns.
The apothecary preparations also includes a bottle with a print-out that includes your name, and unique codes tied to your preparation (for re-ordering, online), as well as a print out listing your concerns, with instructions on mixing the preparation, on the back.

It’s very easy to prepare the concoction when you get home, adding in your concentrates one at a time and shaking your apothecary dropper bottle for twenty seconds. You’re then ready to use to your tailored-to-you product! I have been instructed to use mine day and night (about 2-3 drops per use).

Kiehl’s never ceases to amaze me.

I was also introduced to an outstanding primer, that I never considered using before that visit.  (Micro-Blur is the name of it). The primer and moisturizer, made with lentil extract, creates a matte base that doesn’t allow BB cream to enter my pores and make my skin oily. After a day in the rain and traveling, my skin looked completely flawless by night. I received a sample of this product, but I intend on adding it to my collection once my sample runs out.

While my trip to NYC was a short one, and even though many things didn’t get crossed off my bucketlist, visiting the flagship store of Kiehl’s was pretty high up there (weird, I know!) and I’m glad I got to experience the apothecary preparations!

You can expect a whole bunch of blog posts in the next few days to have a ‘NYC trip’ focus! Stay tuned!

Have you ever had an apothecary preparation done at the Kiehl’s flagship store? Let me know in the comments!

Special NYC trip & the Challenge of Packing a Practical Carry-On!

Hey there,

So in case you didn’t know (but my guess is that you’ve been following along…) I’m headed to NYC TONIGHT(!) for some business and some pleasure!

I’ve never been to New York City, so I’m absolutely thrilled at this opportunity that has been given to me and can’t wait to explore what this city has to offer me! Fashion + Broadway + Saks … oh, my!

I checked out the weather for the upcoming trip, as I’ve never traveled in Autumn and wanted to be prepared with an appropriate wardrobe for the occasion. The lowest temperature expected while we are there is around 18 degrees which is absolutely perfect for layering, for long walks, and for feeling out a new city in the very best season, around. It’s supposed to rain on Saturday, but I’ve already packed my tiny umbrella, and I never minded a walk in the rain.

But here’s where the tricky part comes along: I have so many jackets (a staple in my wardrobe and always fun to layer on), what could I possibly pack?! And what about my scarves? With so many to choose from, which should I pair with my outfits?! And shoes!? I need walking shoes, I need dressy shoes, what do I do? And what about purses!? Will my novelty cat-bag be a little too extreme for this city, or will I fit right in? ‘Friends’ has taught me nothing about what normal plebs wear, and ‘Sex in the City’ is way out of my price range! What do I do?!

Have a look in my bag:

I stick to carry-ons because they’re guaranteed to never get lost (they’re right by my side at all times) and they’re easy to lug around a busy city if need  be. Packed inside my carry on, I’ve got…

  • My ElevenParis running shoes (designer AND comfortable!)
  • My Nine West sling-back chunky heels
  • Plain t-shirts (black + white) & FEMINIST t-shirt from Feminist Apparel
  • My black bodycon dress with slight collar
  • Ribbed camo green sweater from Zara
  • A long button down shirt with a black and white design from H&M
  • Dark Jeans
  • Mustard cigarette pants from H&M
  • Camo Green cropped pants from Zara
  • High Waisted Mom Levi’s (vintage from the 80s)
  • My vintage bomber (it’s from the 80s and still had the tags on it!)
  • An assortment of jewellery and socks (not featured)

I may be packing too much. I may also be packing too little. The good news is that I left enough space in my luggage to stock it with NYC goodies! Should I get an ‘I ❤ NY’ shirt, or is that tacky? I usually avoid tourist-y things, but I feel like this one is classic.

I may not have an opportunity to blog while I’m in New York City, but look for the occasional Instagram update, and you can be sure to see a blog post when I get back!

The Fundamentals of a Quick Trip to NYC – Part 2 – What’s In My Handbag?!

Hey there,

Yesterday, I showed you my beauty and skincare essentials that I am going to be taking with me to New York City on Thursday. Today, I’m going to show you what’s going in my handbag (which was a beautiful Winners find, let me tell you!) that will sit with me for the flight. My partner J and I will be taking separate flights, unfortunately, so I definitely have some entertaining alternatives to keep me occupied for the short ride over.

inmyhandbag

  1. Vaseline Lip Therapy – This is my number one essential item for flights. I don’t know about you, but something about the pressure, the stress of travel, and the exhaustion leads me to have really chapped and awful lips. This item is a must, and instantly gives a repaired look when applied.
  2. Starbucks Light Frap To-Go – I’m going to grab one of these from the terminal on my way on the plane, because it’s an awesome pick-me-up without all the sweetness, and I want to make sure I’m ready to go right when we arrive in NYC, and that minor caffeine boost will help me there!
  3. Bath and Body Works Shea Infused Socks – I’m ALWAYS cold on the plane! So not only are these socks super warm for that quick trip (and easy to throw into a handbag), but they’re soooo damn comfy, AND they’re infused with shea butter, so your feet are left soft and pampered at the end of the flight!
  4. Kiehl’s Deluxe Hydro-Plumping Sample – This tini-tiny, throw me right in the bag size makes this product super convenient for travel. Just like my lips, my face always has the weirdest reaction when flying. I tend to break out from lack of moisture and the pressure of the plane, so this product will make sure I’m left glowing when we arrive.
  5. iPad – Mine is ancient, but we all know what a good time killer the apps on this product can be! And I love to use the WordPress app to work on posts! This will be a necessity for blogging in the hotel (if I have time!)
  6. Nasty Galaxy by Sophia Amoruso – I’ll be honest, this isn’t in my hands just yet. But it releases today! And I’m expecting it to be delivered to my house by the end of the night! This will absolutely make my flight an inspirational one. I can’t wait to read it!
  7. Vogue Magazine – The latest fashion magazine snagged while waiting at the terminal for your flight? A travel necessity!
  8. Enjoy Today Embossed Notebook from Indigo – This beautiful journal is my go-to notebook, and I bring  it with me everywhere I go. You never know when a moment will arrive where you need to jot your thoughts down but your phone (or iPad) just won’t do. It’s currently filled with stories my grandmother shared orally with me, before she passed.
  9. Mac Lipstick ‘Stone‘ – This colour! It goes with everything. It pairs with every season. It’s always in my bag for a quick spruce up post-travel. I actually bought it in an airport terminal, to be honest!

What’s your handbag/shoulder bag essential? What always makes it on a flight with you?

Tried, Tested & True! What’s Inside My Make-Up Bag? NYC Packing Part 1

Hey there,

In case you haven’t been following along with my recent blog posts, I’m headed to New York City on Thursday! This will be a trip for both a business opportunity as well as pleasure. I’m really looking forward to it because I need a little escape, and because I’ve always wanted to visit the city that never sleeps. Fashion, theatre, shopping – yes, please!

I’m going to lead up to the vacation with a few sneak peeks into what I’m packing for the trip: my make-up bag, my handbag, and my carry-on. Today’s post is about what’s inside my makeup bag!

Firstly, I don’t wear a lot of make-up. I don’t have the time to spend on painting my face and I admire those that do. I also admire those that do for the mere fact that they have mad artistry skills and I definitely do not! Unless it’s a winged eyeliner (I’ve been perfecting that since the 9th grade) or a cat eye like Miss Peregrine from the newly released movie, I certainly have to keep it simple in the make-up category.

Have a look at what’s inside my make-up bag!:

It’s my first time making one of these composite photos- how did I do? Let me know in the comments!

I  keep it pretty simple with the basics…

  1. Physician’s Formula Organic Wear BB Cream – this is the only thing close to foundation that I will put on my face. I tried their CC cream, but it made me breakout like crazy. I use light to medium shade on my skin, and I find the cream light, nourishing, and breathable. The only thing I would replace this with – and I’ve tried LOTS of different BBs – would be Kiehl’s BB cream.
  2. Sephora Universal Brow Freeze in Clear- I have pin straight hair but the curliest (and thickest) brows ever. This wax keeps them in place, but careful! On hot days, this stuff will melt right off your face. I use Vaseline if it comes to that.
  3. Sephora Bright Future Colour Corrector in Green – I use this for those stubborn breakouts that sit like red chicken pox on my face, sometimes. The green balances the redness and allows for an even coverage with my BB cream.
  4. L’Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara – I have crazy long eyelashes, so I just need something to give them a nice flip, get them real dark, and not get too clumpy. It has an AMAZING brush considering it’s a cheaper line, and I plan on sterilizing the brush and using it for other mascaras when I run out.
  5. Kiehl’s Calendula Cleanser– come on, do I need to say it again? Kiehl’s has changed my life.
  6. Kiehl’s Calendula Toner- alcohol free and out of this world. So amazing, even this girl with thirsty skin uses it.
  7. Nars Blush in Goulou – This was actually a freebie I received for reaching VIB status at Sephora, so unfortunately, this particular colour cannot be found in stores but just from third-party retailers. It’s a really nice tone of pink with a hint of beige and brown. I love it.
  8. Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser in a Sample size – easy mask to-go, absolutely amazing.
  9. Kiehl’s Midnight Recover Concentrate – my new nighttime regime at the end of a good wash! It’s heavenly… (mine is 15mL)
  10. Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate – the daytime, fatigue fighting,  energizing oil routine for my mornings.

That’s what’s in my make-up/beauty bag for my NYC trip! Of course, my purse holds a few Sephora and Mac lipsticks that I’ll be taking along with me, but how about I share that in the next post…

What’s your most important toiletry product for when you travel? Let me know in the comments!

AND! A big ‘THANK YOU!’ to all the recent followers and comments on my blog… ILY all 🙂

Skin Breakthrough! – Kiehl’s is Outstanding Quality!

Hey there,

I have been transformed.
I’ve had a revolutionary skin breakthrough.
I have had an absolutely sensational skincare experience.

Where has Kiehl’s been all my life?!

Yesterday, I went to Mapleview Mall and stepped into a Kiehl’s for the first time, desperate to do something about these random breakouts I have been having. I was immediately greeted by a friendly and informative skincare specialist named Breshna, who was so warm, welcoming and excited about the products, it was difficult not to get excited, myself!

You see, I’ve been trying to change up my skincare routine. I recognize the importance of using quality products and ensuring that you are focusing on key issues relating to age now, so they won’t become difficult to handle problems in the future. I have been trying to be rid of products that simply don’t work for my skin, and to not see more expensive products as an “expense” but an investment. Because, truly, spending time on your skin in the morning and evening is not one of vanity but of care, and it’s absolutely an investment into less concern in the future. (And to all you sunbathers – this means putting sunscreen on when you’re headed to the beach!)

When you shop at Kiehl’s for the first time, the skincare experts let you know that you qualify for a free skin examination that will determine what products will be best for your skin type and your problem zones. If you don’t have the time to do that, and are more of a “shop online” type, this informative experience is also available through Kiehl’s ‘Healthy Skin Routine Finder’ questionnaire.

Since I went in there for problem spots, I was directed to Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Spot Treatment. I’ve only used the product for one night, and already all the breakouts I was having concerns about have dried up and diminished! I had one spot that had been fighting along for a week now, and that too has vanished. I kid you not! Miracle serum, without question!

Your visit and purchase also comes with samples! I received a Calendula cleanser and toner, and I don’t think I’ve felt my skin feel so clean as I did after using that sample. The sample worked, because my next visit will include a purchase of the cleanser. I also received a sample of the Deep Pore Face Mask and OH. MY. GOD. Never have I EVER felt such power in a face mask before! It seems silly to say, but it’s changed my life: I will never use another Lush face mask or crap off-the-shelf mask on my face, again. It tingled, it firmed, it cleaned… it was out of this world. This sample has suckered me into yet another purchase on my next visit.

My visit to Kiehl’s comes with perfect timing for my NYC trip, as this company originated ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (omg) at their flagship store in NYC! They started as an apothecary (how cool is that?) and continue to use only natural nature-derived products along with the boosting power of Science to make products that not only work but are great for your skin. The Kiehl’s company themselves also don’t test on animals, and for a veg-head animal lover such as myself, that’s not only a bonus but immensely important.

Walking into Kiehl’s was the best decision of my shopping trip yesterday, because they’ve made a life-long customer. As my skin changes, I know I will find the right products there to adapt to my skin, and transform it into the best version of itself. Yes, the cost is a notch above the price of products you’ll find on the shelf, but for good reason: they are of a higher quality, they work, and they’re natural. If you don’t start investing those few extra dollars into better skincare options, you’ll pay the price down the road!

So – am I late to the party?! What’s your favourite Kiehl’s product? Or if you’re going to join me as a tardy party member, what’s got you interested?! Leave a comment!
