Why I Can’t Watch Violent Movies Anymore: Spiritual Awakening and Frequency

Blessings, beautiful souls —

I continue with my personal lessons on navigating what spiritually resonates, in the hopes that perhaps someone reading might see a little of themselves reflected in what I share. I have closed the book, Rue’s Kitchen – Italian Folk Magic, as I simply could not go on (read my Goodreads review here). But today, I bring you outside of books and want to speak to another form of entertainment that has taken on a new shape for me.

I have become exceptionally sensitive to video media over the last year or so.

Shows, series, or even movies that I once watched or even adored, I can no longer comfortably watch. There are even shows that I used to enjoy with my husband (like The Boys, for example) that I cannot spiritually tolerate. I used to watch True Crime documentaries, and they now make me physically uncomfortable.

Just yesterday, in anticipation of the release of Practical Magic 2, I wanted to take myself down memory lane. Pre-teen Claudia, who was in her witchy phase of life, loved everything about Practical Magic! I put on the original film on Netflix yesterday with nostalgic excitement – I turned it off the moment the pigeon was killed in the love spell. I then proceeded to Reiki-clean the energy of my living room.

I simply cannot watch things with dark magic, the Devil, evil, violence, or animal and child deaths anymore. I do not watch the news, and when Jordan (my husband) puts it on in the house, I either leave the room or ask for it to be turned off. In my youth, I loved horror movies; now, they’re intolerable.

In my search for answers, I came across multiple people speaking exactly to what I am experiencing; as my sensitivity and psychic awareness have increased, my tolerance for negativity and violence has decreased. Someone wrote: “You are what you consume,” and perhaps this explains why I also need to stay out of social media spaces.

I refer to it as being an energetic intolerance, and energetic intolerance is an actual phrase used in Kundalini/spiritual-awakening materials. One source describes it as becoming acutely aware that certain things feel “energetically off” and that the energetic system is becoming more discerning about how to process it – if at all.

First, my response was: this is fiction; I am fine (for some reason, I am still able to do this with Game of Thrones) – but now my response is: I don’t want this in my field; I don’t want this in my house. I don’t think I’ve become more afraid of darkness. I think I’ve become less willing to invite it into my consciousness for entertainment.

If our frequency is changing, does that mean we’re becoming more sensitive or simply becoming less desensitized? At what point does entertainment stop being entertainment and instead become an influence on our frequency?

This also extends to music: music that once resonated with me no longer matches my frequency. I cannot listen to much of the music I loved in my youth because it honestly makes me physically uncomfortable to have it playing. I find myself drawn to high-frequency yoga playlists, classical music, and even finding joy in children’s Disney songs.

There was a time when I could watch something violent and walk away from it without giving it another thought. Now, I can feel the residue of certain scenes long after they have ended. It isn’t always fear. It isn’t even necessarily distress. It is more of a feeling that something has entered my space that I do not want there.

I don’t think my spiritual growth has made me incapable of facing darkness (in fact, I think it’s made me stronger, as I have no true fear of darkness). What has changed is my desire to voluntarily bring certain forms of darkness into my home and consume them for entertainment.

The more connected I become to my own energy, the more aware I seem to be of what leaves me feeling clear and what leaves me feeling heavy. I notice it in books. I notice it in television. I notice it in social media. I notice it in conversations. I simply do not have time for inviting things into my field that energetically do not align.

For me, raising my frequency has not felt like becoming happier, lighter, or more spiritually evolved every day; it has meant becoming more discerning about what I allow into my Awareness. Some things that once felt completely harmless now feel deeply incompatible with where I am. Where I used to say, I can handle this, I am now saying, I don’t want this. And I can’t even push through it – my body gets physically ill when I try.

Love and Light is not spiritual gaslighting; it’s about knowing exactly what you’re willing to let influence your energy and not making space for anything else. This is how I am choosing to live: let all that I consume be infused with Love & Light.

Have you noticed the same? Have you seen an intolerance arise for things that no longer align with your personal frequency?
