Why Authentic Spiritual Teachers Don’t Create Dependency

Blessings, beautiful souls,

Any teacher who says or implies, “I have the answer and you don’t” is a half-teacher. Whole teachers honor their students’ wisdom as well as their own. The fact that the crowds were impressed by Jesus’s teaching demonstrates that they understood the truth he imparted, and he awakened their memory of it.

The Mystical Messiah, pg. 231

I finished The Mystical Messiah by Alan Cohen this morning. I don’t remember the last time I highlighted so many passages in one book. But this quote, above, has inspired this post today, because the discernment of spiritual teachers is essential, especially in the day and age of social media and epic performance.

I have had clients say to me that they wish they had the gifts that I have. There is no secret recipe to my gifts, and I am not the Chosen One. I merely asked for my gifts to be activated so that I may help humanity heal, and doors began to open.

The Universe provided me with the gifts needed for the specific healing needs of my clients at every point in time. I began with Tarot reading, which is tangible and more easily trusted by individuals who are just starting on the spiritual path. In addition, I didn’t fully trust myself and Spirit, so I also searched for something physical and tangible to fall onto as I helped where I could.

When I finally abandoned my old life to pursue the dreams that were calling me in my soul, a new door to my gifts was opened by the Universe: clairaudient mediumship. Still anxious about this realization, I kept it quiet and called it intuition as I continued Tarot reading. Until I simply couldn’t deny it anymore and felt the freedom that came with that acknowledgment.

Next, I became a mother – the ultimate Awakening of my gifts – and my awareness of the help I was meant to provide to spiritual mothers was shared with me. And more recently, my connection to the Council of Light has been revealed.

These gifts are how I am meant to assist humanity. They are not exclusive to me and are not because I am “extra healed” or anything of the sort. They are the best avenue for me to help the Ascension of planet earth, so they are what the Universe has offered to me. I could ask for more and I would receive them, but only if I asked from a place separate from Ego. I don’t need more gifts to help humanity, but am open to whatever doors God wishes me to walk through to do so. None of these gifts benefit me, in particular (I can’t really use them for my own big questions), other than being able to do what I love to do and what gives me a great sense of purpose and joy.

But they’re not exclusively mine, and that’s what I tell all my clients. It’s what any good mentor, spiritual teacher, guru, or soul leader should do; we must provide the tools that our client needs to continue their path of healing without us.

Any teacher that makes you dependant upon them for soul serenity is preying on your Ego rather than serving your Christed Self. Because you are a Christed Being. We all are! And a true teacher honours that aspect of your being, wants to lift that part of you up, and wants you to live in Alignment with it at all times. Like the word, Namaste – “The divine in me honors the divine in you.”

A traditional hymn extols, “What a friend we have in Jesus.” Indeed we do. Yet Plato said, “True friendship can occur only among equals.” If we are to be a friend to Jesus, and he to us, we cannot allow idolatry to quake the common ground we share with him. The consummation of our relationship with Jesus Christ is to look directly into his eyes and call him not just master, but brother. The disciple becomes the master; the seeker, the sought; the lost, the found; and the human, God.

The Mystical Messiah, pg. 271

All that being said, we always need a spiritual teacher — even if our spiritual teachers want us to step into our own personal power and godliness. We fall into the trap of Ego if we think we can do this all on our own and don’t need anyone else’s Light to illuminate the path before us. We can find that help through spiritual texts, through gurus who have embodied the Christ Consciousness and are living examples of humanity Ascended, through teachers who clear the fog when our tunnel vision is disturbed. But some teachers come to us at a certain stage in our life and then encourage us to walk on, on our own.

Like Cohen writes in The Mystical Messiah, I do not believe this guidance can be found through religion, unfortunately. He writes, “Here again we must understand that the real church is not a religion. It is a state of consciousness. Jesus did not intend to start a religion. He intended to deliver truth to the world. People form religions in an attempt to capture and sustain truth. In a way they do; many pure elements within Christianity remain true to Christ’s vision. Yet corruption creeps into all religions and distorts the original message. Jesus spent a significant part of his ministry exposing the hypocrisy that had infiltrated the Jewish religion. If he were to return today, he would do the same for Christianity. The master said, “The gates of hell will not prevail against my church.” The gates of hell have indeed prevailed against many churches because they have become misaligned with the intention of their founder. Yet the gates of hell cannot touch a pure state of mind. If you remember that Christ’s real church is the consciousness he attained, you will rise above the trappings of ego, and renew his presence on Earth through your own.”

Religion represents a spiritual teacher that seeks your dependancy and servitude, through the amplification of the fearful Ego, rather than being an instuition that provides you the tools to recognize your own godliness. In my experience, religion tries to keep you trapped as “less than” the Creator, in servitude to the Universe, but God said, you are made in My image. How can any image of Source be less than? You are a fractal of Source, and as Cohen writes, “A ray of sunlight contains all the attributes of the sun. What is in the sun is in the ray. You cannot split the ray off from the sun. It would have no purpose or existence. If you know the ray, you know the sun.”

We are not meant to remain seekers forever. We are meant to become witnesses. To walk with teachers for a time, gather what is True, and then continue forward carrying the Light ourselves. The world does not need more gurus. It needs more individuals who remember who they are.

And if a teacher truly serves Christ Consciousness, they will rejoice the moment you no longer need them because you have learned to stand in direct relationship with God, Source, Truth, Love itself.

That is not the end of the path; that is the beginning of walking it as your whole, Christed Self.
